Healthy Aging Month
September is Healthy Aging Month. It’s never too late to get started on better health practices. Use this month as a reminder and motivation to take stock of where you’ve been, and where you want to be whether it’s physically, socially, financially, or mentally. To get you started on bettering or re-inventing yourself, here are some ideas that we have to offer.
Be positive in your conversations and your actions every day. When you catch yourself complaining, check yourself right there and change the conversation to something positive.
Distance yourself from people who do not have a positive outlook on life. They will only depress you and stop you from moving forward. Surround yourself with energetic, happy, positive people of all ages and you will be happier too.
Smile often. It feels good and it’s contagious. It attracts other happy people and it might even allow you to make some new joyful friends. Also, don’t forget those teeth! It’s one of the first things people notice. Visit your dentist regularly and keep that grin white and healthy.
Walk like a vibrant, healthy person. Analyze your gait. Do you walk slowly with your head down because you have just become lazy or, perhaps, have a fear of falling? Make a conscious effort to take big strides, walk with your heel first, and wear comfortable shoes.
Stand up straight! You can knock off the appearance of a few extra years and pounds with this trick your mother kept trying to tell you. Look at yourself in the mirror. Are you holding your stomach in, have your shoulders back, chin up? Check out how much better your neck looks! Fix your stance and practice it every day, all day until it is natural. You will look great and feel better.
Lonely? Do something about it, Volunteer your time. Take a class. Invite someone to meet for lunch, brunch, dinner, or coffee.
Start walking. It’s good for your health and offers an opportunity to visit neighbors and meet new people.
Make this month the time to set up your annual physical and other health screenings. Go to the appointments and then, hopefully, you can stop worrying about ailments for a while.
Find a new hobby. It’s never too late to learn something new. Find your inner artist, take music lessons, study photography. It’s great for brain health!
Travel. Don’t regret those trips you didn’t take. If you have the money, visit other countries. These trips can be very eye-opening and enriching experiences. Take family trips. Go to Disney World or the beach.
Re-invent yourself, better yourself, whatever it is you do, take this time to focus on the positive aspects of growing older. It’s never too late.
